The Sunday Curators
18.05.13 - 08.06.13
SWG3 Gallery, Glasgow

A group show with Claire Barclay, Florent Dubois, Andreas Ervik, Mathieu Mercier, Flore Nové-Josserand, Owen Piper, Josué Rauscher, Shinichi Takeda & Pedro Wirz

The Sunday Curators takes its inspiration from a type of display commonly found in homes on fireplaces, consoles and cabinets, at school or work on desks or hidden in lockers. The Sunday Curators is a group of micro-exhibitions that aims to satisfy our need to see art everywhere.

The Sunday curators are sharp edge designers, obsessive collectors, and perfectionist, who have developed a self-taught practice. The Sunday Curators aims to reveal one of the most common acts of showing, displaying...exhibiting. It first appeared online as a collection of interiors sent in by artists in an attempt to disclose their own private arrangements. In SWG3 Gallery the show takes another dimension by staging each artist's proposition on a plinth like piece of furniture surrounded by an artificial magnolia domesticity.

These miniature exhibits are well organised, very personal and some are not without a touch of mania ; this is the case of the impressive collection of carrier bags by Owen Piper or this selection of facepots by Florent Dubois. Claire Barclay made a slightly different choice by showing a selection of what usually
adorns the shelves of her living room. Shinichi Takeda’s proposition illustrates the way the artist’s process reflects his everyday habits ; in this case, a meticulous, rigorous and organised way of being. Flore Nové-Josserand and Pedro Wirz choose a completely different approach. Inviting other artists, writers and curators to contribute they have taken this opportunity to curate their own show within the show. Flore asked Adeline Grais-Cernea, James Clarkson, Chooc Ly Tan and Sophie Michael to send her objects symbolising the way artists mix everyday objects within their practice, her piece highlights the nature and function of these objects and their status as tools. Pedro’s practice embraces social networking as a medium, he invited Thom O’Nions to select a series of texts to be displayed on an abstraction of a fridge with magnets.

Our three other artists responded to the invitation by imagining a new body of work. Andreas Ervik, Mathieu Mercier and Josué Rauscher simply ask the question do their works “fit” into our newly refurbished flat.

This exhibition doesn’t aim at transforming the space into an interior but to subtly address the gallery’s elements. In the way the pieces are shown, there is something democratic yet dictatorial as they are usually made just for of one person or the select few . The furniture in the show, acting as hybrid versions of plinths, maintains the ambiguous nature of these exhibited objects.
